The search for an actor to
play chess champ Josh Wait-
zkin proved a bit prob-
lematic. Max Pomeranc, the
youngster portraying Josh
Waitzkin, was no clear-cut
choice. "Max's test was good,
but not great," concedes Mr.
Rudin, who credits director
Steven Zaillian's confidence
in the 8-year-old for the
choice, which has paid off
handsomely.
Mr. Rudin knew there are
those who could be bored
with the story of the board
game. "People's image of
chess is that of these old men
moving their pieces every 15
minutes," says Mr. Rudin.
The producer was more in-
terested in the timeless tale
of family ties. "This," says
Scott Rudin of the film, "is
the story of a child and his
parents."
A game player in
Hollywood, what kind of
player is Scott Rudin when it
comes to the board game? "I
have no interest in chess,"
he says with a smile. ❑
