what it all meant" to be on
such a hit show.
Having graduated to
"Class of '96," Ms. Ryan has
a grasp on Jessica. "She's
been a little too good," says
Ryan with a laugh.
"Just recently, they've
added more human quali-
ties to her. Originally, I was
supposed to play her very po-
litically correct, being nice
to everyone. Well, that's not
the way life is. It got bor-
ing."
Lisa Ryan is far from dull
offscreen, devoting her spare
time to "riding horses, being
at the beach, taking trips."
She is not merely along for
the ride in "Class of '96,"
taking an active interest in
developing Cohen even fur-
ther, including focusing
more on the character's Jew-
ish heritage. "I hope they
get more into that. It's an
important issue," says the
actress.
At issue right now is
whether the show will sur-
vive the season. Its low
ratings may never allow
Jessica and company to
become upperclassmen.
Lisa Ryan, meanwhile, is a
student of the entertainment
industry, learning quite a
bit about the business end of
the profession.
She also knows that a good
character allows room for
growth. "I think Jessica has
a lot of growing up to do,"
says Ms. Ryan.
Does Lisa Dean Ryan
share that trait? The actress
thinks for a moment.
"Yeah," she says, "I hope I'll
also be growing."
