Theatre and went on to do musical comedy at the Botsford Inn, working for a New York organization that cast only two parts with local performers. Buoyed by her Detroit successes, she returned to New York, working in chil- dren's theater as well as with the mime company until illness forced her home again. While recuper- ating, she worked as a part- time secretary at the Vanguard Theatre, now the Gem. "I was ready to leave Detroit again when they were putting together the Hilberry Theatre," she rem- inisced. "I made the first company." That was in 1963, the year she fell in love with a psychologist, turning her priorities to marriage and family. Several years after her husband died in 1973, she opened a gift and smoke shop in the American Center Building in Southfield, remaining in business for nine years and continuing to take dance classes. She resumed her theater career in 1980 by trying out for a production at the Southfield Civic Theater, which led to roles for the Attic Theatre, Actors Alliance and other Michigan companies. When Evelyn Orbach got the idea for JET, she asked Ms. Hermelin-Weinberg to help get it off the ground, and the two went to the national Jewish Theatre in Skokie, Ill., to get some direction. "It took us a couple of years," reported the versa- tile entertainer, who also asked her brother, David Hermelin, to advise them about using the information obtained in Illinois in the Jewish community here. After appearing in JET's first production, Ms. Her- melin-Weinberg also became committed to its program of staged readings, extending her talents to a similar program sponsored by the Jewish Community Center's Institute for Retired Professionals. She has been performing since age 3. Her mother loved music, and her father loved the theater. Is it more difficult for her to appear on stage in her home state where so many people know her through both her work and special activities such as the Women's Division of Jewish Federation? "If that's on my mind, I'm not really performing," she said. Isn't It Romantic will be at the West Bloomfield Jewish Community Center through Oct. 3. For infor- mation, call 788-2900.
