Born in Ga'aton, Mr. Be'er has created works ranging from dramatic social studies to delightful comedies that en- chant children and adults alike. Referring to some of his works, like a Reservist's Diary (1989), Real Time (1991), and Angeles Negros (1992), he said, "Choreography must be in touch with life. Dance has to turn reality into terms of movement." This year he has worked abroad, by invitation, in Austria and Hungary, and his worldwide reputation is blossoming. At festivals held in Germany in which the U.S.'s Joffrey Ballet and Jen- nifer Muller/The Works par- ticipated, the Kibbutz Con- temporary Dance Company's program contained works almost entirely by Mr. Be'er. Though the company is pro- spering, being a kibbutz com- pany dancer does not ensure an easy life. Aside from the grilling discipline, each dancer has to adjust to the obligations towards the home kibbutz and the requirements of the company. On one occa- sion a key company member had to be replaced at a perfor- mance because he was called away to deal with an urgent kibbutz bookkeeping matter. Today, general manager Dan Rudolf from Kibbutz Amir deals with such prob- lems, and senior dancers like Zichri Dagan from Kibbutz Givat Haim and Efrat Livni from Kibbutz Hatzor help with stage, rehearsal and per- formance management. Company members are also encouraged to develop their skills and their choregraphy has often been staged. The latest to emerge is Zvi Frenkel from Kibbutz Beit Alfa, who showed consider- able originality in The Silver Grapefruit, dedicated to a Hebrew poet Ze'ev Havat- selet. Sheer hard work and disci- pline, creative local and foreign talent, combined to make a year to remember for the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company. ❑ WZPS In the 1600s New Jersey was divided into East and West Jersey and privately owned. Among the West Jersey pro- prietors was Benjamin Levy of London.
