The student/teachers are
the second group to undergo
CET's Mathematics Solution
program. "The idea is really
very simple," says Yona
Peless, president of CET as
well as initiator and director
of Mathematics Solution. "On
the one hand, Israel suffers
from poor mathematics
teaching at the elementary
level, particularly in remote
regions. On the other hand, a
wealth of new immigrants
with suitable academic
backgrounds live in these
areas and are looking for
work."
After completing the five
month course, the newly
trained teachers work with
small selected groups of
pupils whose math scores fall
into the bottom 20 or top five
percent. With data on the
students' improvement has
yet to be collated, initial
results are promising.
In the meantime, CET has

help guide the teachers in
their jobs. Beba Shternberg,
who works with the project's
development staff, recalls her
aliyah 12 years ago: "I had
been in the country eight
months and was put in a
classroom without the
language skills or any of the
basic knowledge needed for
conducting a class here."
While Beba and her staff
have made things easier for
today's immigrants working
in Israeli classrooms, it still
isn't easy. "The language was
very difficult," says David
Seltzer, a new immigrant
from Odessa who began
teaching in the northern
development town of Maalot
less than one year after arriv-
ing in Israel. "And relations
in the classroom between
students and teachers are
completely different from
those back home." Despite the
difficulties, David loves the
work and is looking forward
to next year, when he'll be an
old-hand at the job.
Meanwhile, back at Yona's
office, the telephone rings. On
the line is the superintendent
of Israel's schools saying he is
thrilled by the new teachers'
performance and wants them
to work full-time next year. ❑
