I had the freedom to follow my
own schedule and explore at
leisure, rather than race back
to a waiting tour bus.
Some buses provided unex-
pected tours of their own. When
I boarded bus #3 one day,
heading for the Old City, the
bus seemed to take a long and
digressive route to my desti-
nation, affording varied sights
of Jerusalem's busy streets
before it finally reached the
Jaffa Gate. (Buses 13, 19, 20
and 30 also go to this site —just
one example of how extensive
is the bus network.)
On still another jaunt, I used
bus 48 to go in another direc-
tion. Starting downtown, it
headed out beyond the Old City
and along the Jaffa Road. My
destination was an area known
as the Tayelet. It was the
starting point for the Haas
Promenade, a walkway afford-
ing a spectacular view of all of
Jerusalem.
Indeed, it was bus riding that
led me to some of my most
memorable walks. A dedicated
walker, I didn't miss the pedes-
trian pleasures that Jerusalem
offers. But I could not have
enjoyed many of those walks —
on Mount Herzl, on the campus
of Hebrew University, in the
Old City, along the Haas
Promenade — without first
getting there on wheels.
Of course, coping with public
buses in any city has its
frustrations. Sometimes I had
to cool my heels while waiting
long minutes at bus stops. But
in those cases, the waiting
crowd of passengers — always
diverse and lively — was
diversion enough.
Occasionally, too, I encoun-
tered a gruff driver. In one
instance, a driver loudly
chastised me — even though I
was obviously a tourist —
because I apparently used the
wrong procedure to give my
fare.
But these were only minor
setbacks in what otherwise was
smooth riding. It was the buses
of Jerusalem that allowed me
to be footloose in Jerusalem
when and where I wanted to be.
So on my next visit to Jeru-
salem, one of the first things
do to get re-acquainted with the
city is take a ride on Bus 99.
Then I plan to master more
fully my favorite bus routes so
I can use my customized tour-
ing service even more effec-
tively.
Then, once I'm on board, I'll
sit back, relax, and enjoy the
views from the window of the
bus. ❑
