pick up another bus 99 two
hours later.
But most of us stayed on for
the full circle, in part because
the next bus wouldn't come for
two hours - the schedule was
disappointingly infrequent -
and in part because it was fun
to rumble along through
Jerusalem on this unlikely style
tour bus.
From the Old City, we
headed to the modern area,
passing the stately King David
Hotel, admiring the parks and
gardens throughout the area.
In one park, we saw a bride and
groom posing for the wedding
photo, surrounded by vividly
colored flowers.
Then, very quickly, it
seemed, we were back at the
busy central bus station, our
circle tour completed.
But it wasn't the end of my
own bus riding in Jerusalem. In
fact, for me, Bus 99 was just a
start. In the following days, I
started to use the public buses
often. With the intricate
network of Jerusalem buses, I
could find a bus going virtually
anywhere I needed. What's
more, whenever I was footsore
from too much walking in the
city, the buses offered an
alternative way of sightseeing.
Making bus riding especially
convenient was the fact that I
was based at the Jerusalem
Hilton hotel, which has a lofty
location on a hill overlooking
Jerusalem - and is only a short
walk away from Central Bus
Station, and even closer to the
buses heading for Mount
Scopus.
So it was easy to return to
Mount Scopus to revisit Hebrew
University and Hadassah
Hospital after the Bus 99 tour.
I simply walked to the nearby
bus stop. Of course, at this and
other places, I had to ask
several waiting passengers
which was the right bus. But
that proved an easy way to
strike up conversations and
meet Jerusalemites, who know
the buses of their city as well as
New Yorkers know their sub-
way routes.

On board the buses, the
diversity of passengers made
the ride interesting even when
we were stuck in traffic. The
inside of a Jerusalem city bus
is almost a microcosm of the
diversity of the city itself. Young
men in Chasidic dress, Arab
women in their garb, soldiers in
uniform, infants in their
mothers' arms - all of them
ride the buses of Jerusalem.
And while most passengers
are commuters using the same
routes daily, the buses served
my needs as a tourist, too.
When I visited Mount Herzl
and Yad Vashem - both sites
are easily accessible by bus -
