Friends of Israel Cancer
Association will hold its
14th annual dinner dance
Oct. 10 Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
Honored at this event
will be Ernest and Dorothy
Curtis. A special introduc-
tion of the honorees will be
made by David Hermelin.
The guest speaker will be
Rabbi Efry Spectre.
Dorothy Curtis is past
president of B'nai B'rith
Ivan S. Bloch Chapter and
has been secretary of the
regional office of the Zionist
Organization of America.
Her major community

involvement has been in the
field of mental health.She is
a co-trustee of the Curtis
trust for the Mentally Ill.
Ernest Curtis was the
founder of American
Franchise Systems. He has
also lectured on the fran-
chised system of distribu-
tion. He is past president of
the B'nai B'rith Ivan S.
Bloch Lodge and is an offi-
cer on the board of
Congregation B'nai Moshe.

Parkland Honors
Joseph Still

Pearl Brodsky of West
Bloomfield along with her
children, Bernard T.
Brodsky, Dr. Stuart L.
Brodsky and Auzanne
Arnkoff, have established a
parkland of 5,000 trees in
memory of their beloved
brother and uncle, Joseph
Still. The project, under the
auspices of the Jewish
National Fund, will be

located in the American
Independence Park outside
of Jerusalem.
Joseph Still of Detroit
was a Private First Class in
the United States Army
and served during World
War II. He fought in the
Battle of the Bulge and was
decorated with the Bronze
Star.

David K. Page has been
nominated to serve a sec-
ond year as president of the
Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit,
whose annual meeting and
reception is set for 7:15
p.m. Sept. 28 at Temple
Beth El.
Mr. Page will deliver the
annual report.

Carol Kaczander, director
of the Jewish Information
Service (JIS), will receive
the community's sixth
annual Berman Award for
Outstanding Professional
Service. -
Created through an
endowment by Mandell L.
and Madeleine H. Berman,
the award recognizes the
contributions of Jewish
communal professionals
employed by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit or one of its con-
stituent agencies.
Since its creation, JIS,
which can be reached at
967-HELP (4357), has pro-
vided information and
referrals for 19,000 callers
with any and all types of
questions. Under Ms.
Kaczander's directorship,
JIS is staffed by profession-
al volunteers.
Prior to joining JIS, Ms.
Kaczander was an outreach
worker with the B'nai
B'rith Hillel Foundations of
Metropolitan Detroit. she
also coordinated a peer-
assistant program for stu-
dents with severe and mul-
tiple disabilities for the
Oak Park School District.
The award, which will be
presented at an upcoming
meeting of Federation's
board of governors, is
intended to promote and

reward extraordinary pro-
fessional service. The
Bermans established the
award through the
Federated Endowment
Fund of the Jewish
Federation.
Nominees for the Berman
Award must have worked
in the Detroit Jewish corn-
munity a minimum of five
years. They must have
demonstrated the highest
professional standards in
their chosen field; made
contributions to the general
good of the Jewish commu-
nity.
A committee of lay lead-
ers and professional col-
leagues, chaired by David
K. Page, selected Ms.
Kaczander for the award.

Selwyn Isakow, founder and
president of the Oxford Invest-
ment Group and chairman of
the Bank of Bloomfield Hills,
will be honored Nov. 7 at the
79th annual Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah Banquet.

International board of over-
seers, will present Bar-Ilan
University's honorary fel-
lowships to Dr. Milton and
Lois Shiffmp,. n at Bar-Ilan

Mr. Hermelin has been
involved in the local,
national and international
Jewish communities includ-
ing leadership in both State
