The Women's Endowment
Committee wanted the sem-
inar, in part, to encourage
women in the Jewish com-
munity to create endow-
ments to benefit local caus-
es.
"The bottom line is to
bring women into the
Federation, to get them to
talk about money and to
make them aware of the
endowment program
Federation makes avail-
able," Ms. Citrin said.
Karen Kaufman attended
the seminar and said it
helped her formulate ques-
tions to ask before making
financial decisions.
"If anything happens to a
spouse, women should know
how much money they have
to invest and where to
invest it. They should know
where everything is," she
said. "A lot of women are
sheltered. They really don't
know what questions to
ask." ❑

Investments
Abroad Fall

Investments
abroad
dropped significantly during
the second quarter as the
dollar weakened and local
investment returns were
relatively higher, the Bank
of Israel's foreign currency
department reported last
week.
The Bank of Israel also
reported that foreigners
invested $768 million in
Israel at the end of June
compared to $728 million at
the end of last year. Three-
quarters of their investment
was in stocks.
In investments abroad,
there has been a turn-
around following the sharp
growth in foreign stock
investments during the past
two years and up to the first
quarter of this year.
It was reflected by the
trend for realizing invest-
ments, which overtook new
investments by $236 million
in the second quarter. The
cumulative total of foreign
investment also reflected
the fall, as investments
abroad dropped from $3.2
billion at the end of
February to $2.9 billion in
June.
The investment portfolio
is dominated by Israeli
stocks traded in the New
York Stock Exchange, since
these are exempt from capi-
tal gains taxes.
The stocks gained 10 per-
cent in dollar terms in
January, but lost 8.5 per-
cent of their value from
February to June. ❑

Weight Loss Shocks Scientists

Seattle — A nutrition organi-
zation was hopeful that a nutri-
tionally complete food tablet
would eliminate world hunger,
until the study revealed that one
of the ingredients could cause
weight loss without dieting.
Scientists in Europe found
that an ingredient in the product
named Food Complex 3 actually
caused people to lose weight,
even though they weren't chang-
ing their eating patterns.
According to a study published
in the British Journal of Nutrition,
scientists had speculated that
the weight loss was due to a
reduction in the intestinal
absorption of fat grams.
The development of Food
Complex 3, a project of First Lite
Intl, Inc., could not be used to
fulfill its intetjded goal but it has
been a great success for over-
weight people. A Miami Beach,
Florida, man struggling with a
weight problem for 15 years used
Food Complex 3 on the recom-
mendation of his doctor and lost
43 lbs. He said, "My cholesterol
dropped 96 points and I lost 43
lbs. Now I have to buy all new
clothes." In another report from

Mesa, Arizona, a pharmacist lost
16 lbs. in 14 days with Food
Complex 3 and never felt hungry.
Food Complex 3 is available
through physicians and pharma-
cists without a prescription.
Food Complex 3 is not a drug
and only contains natural ingre-
dients known to be safe by the
FDA. Copies of the references
