Mr. Natan, whose ancestry
can be traced to Iraq, also
looks forward to contributing
elements of his background,
which are steeped in
Sephardic culture. He wants
to teach the congregation
new songs and recite
Sephardic tales his grandfa-
ther used to tell him.
"If I ever had a mission in
my life, this is a very impor-
tant mission because I can
give more than I get," he
says.

Mr. Natan works as a pro-
duction manager at Empire
Iron Works in Detroit. He
will keep his full-time job
while initiating Hebrew
classes and other cultural
activities for the congrega-
tion. He also plans to conduct *I
a special class for boys who
are preparing to become bar
mitzvah.
He expects the congrega-
tion, which consists of 20 to
30 people who regularly
attend services, to grow to
150 once they have a build-
ing.
"We're not going to chase
and convert people," he said.
"The main goal is to bring
people back to the source.
The minute they have a
place, a building, they will
affiliate."
