,
Natan was living in
Jerusalem with his family.
Too young to serve in the
army, the 14-year-old
embarked on his own cru-
sade: leading his congrega-
tion's Yom Kippur services.
In the Natans' house, the
phone rang at 3 p.m. on that
day in October. It was an
Israeli army official. The
elder Mr. Natan, a para-
medic in the reserves, had
five minutes to prepare for
war.
Before Mr. Natan left
home, he issued orders for
Sasson: "You must run the
Yom Kippur service."
When the teen-ager
entered the synagogue, a
sparse gathering of 100 peo-
ple, mostly older women and
children, were whispering
about the war.
"You saw the words; you
wanted to pray, but your
heart, your mind were else-
where," he says.
To unlistening ears,
Sasson recited the Torah por-
tion. When it came time to
open the ark, however, the
young man finally got the
attention of his congregants
by chanting a prayer of hope:
"A prayer that says, 'Our
God in Heaven, please don't
neglect us. Bless us with
wealth and health. Defend us
from our enemies.' "
It was a prayer Sasson had
recited since he was a small
child, but "I felt at this time
everybody woke up. This is
what we needed. It was very
emotional."
Mr. Natan, now 35, also
has strong emotions about
his role as chazzan of the
Sephardic Community of
Greater Detroit. The congre-
gation, founded in 1917 by
Jacob Chicorel, father of cur-
rent president Shirley
Chicorel-Behar, has func-
tioned for years without a
home base.
With the help of Jacob
Chicorel, David Hazan and
Salvatore Katan, earlier ser-
vices took place at Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah. For the past
few years, the congregation
has met at the Jewish
Community Center in Oak
Park. As a leader, Mr.
Natan aims to help the com-
munity break ground for a
synagogue they can call their
own. The congregation's first
choice is a plot of land on
Lahser Road, next door to
Young Israel of Southfield.

chase agreement to secure
