of pupils.
"I am running in the hope
of restoring confidence in
our ability to govern our-
selves," Mr. Jondahl says.
"In our zeal to manufacture,
expand and exploit our dif-
ferences, we've lost our
heart, and perhaps our
souls. We seem to have for-
gotten fundamental respect
for those who are different
in any way.
"I will build trust, not
tear it down," he says.
Mr. Owen, who has close
ties to former Gov. James
Blanchard, could also
emerge as a powerful candi-
date. He and his wife,
Faylene Owen, served as
the state's fund-raisers for
Bill Clinton's Michigan cam-
Paign•
Mr. Owen, a partner at
the law firm Miller Canfield
Paddock and Stone, was the
most recent candidate to
emerge in the Democratic
race. But he has been toy-
ing with the idea for some
time.
"I am concerned with the
direction in which the state
is moving," he says. "I think
our long-term prospects
aren't good unless we devel-
op a strong strategy for jobs
and education with strong
leadership from the gover-
nor's office."
While serving on the
MSU board of trustees, Mr.
Owen led the fight to deny
public funding for the visit
of Black Muslim leader
Louis Farrakhan.
Though governors do not
vote on foreign aid bills to
Israel, Mr. Owen and the
other Democratic candi-
dates support trade rela-
tionships between Michigan
and the Jewish state.
"The government has to
lead and bring together
business and labor, and gov-
ernment and education
must be part of the same
team," he says. "I know that
is possible." ❑
