etroit's teen-age ath-
letes who competed in
Pittsburgh last week
took up where their
compatriots left off the week
before in St. Louis.
Detroit's success in the
Jewish Community Centers'
regional Maccabi Youth
Games in Pittsburgh was led
by two girls teams that have
not recorded big wins in the
past. Detroit's girls soccer
team played a scoreless tie
against host Pittsburgh to
win the bronze medal.
Earlier, the team had played
eventual gold medalist Metro
West N.J. to a standstill
before bowing on two late
goals.
The girls basketball team
had ended a three-year los-
ing streak early in the week
by defeating Richmond. They
came back to win the bronze
medal against neighboring
Ann Arbor, 35-9. Ann Arbor
had also done well in the
tournament, finishing with a
3-2 record.
In boys basketball, Detroit
started by splitting games
with Richmond and Toronto.
The team then dropped a
52-34 decision to eventual
tournament winner South
New Jersey before defeating
Metro West N.J., 61-39. The
2-2 record kept Detroit out of
the medal round, but it
defeated Richmond in a
consolation game to finish
3-2.
In coed volleyball, Detroit's

three teams were very suc-
cessful. Detroit A won the
gold medal, dominating
Syracuse A for the champi-
onship, 15-1, 15-3, 15-3.
Detroit B won the bronze
medal by defeating Ann
Arbor.
Ann Arbor got into the
game by defeating Detroit C
in a close match, 15-13, 14-
16, 17-15.
In boys table tennis, Jon
Sennan won the silver medal
and Andy Black the bronze.
In doubles, Matt Weiss of
Detroit teamed with Russ
Buchman of Pittsburgh for
the gold and Mike Hitsky of
Detroit teamed with Todd
Schacter of Pittsburgh for
the bronze. In girls play,
Detroiters swept the medals:
Jodi Berris, gold; Marla
Tapper, silver; Marjorie
Rudick, bronze; Allison
Young, bronze.
In tennis, Gabe Bernstein
won the bronze in singles
and teamed with Jordan
Steinway to win the silver
in age 12-14 doubles. On
the girls' side, in an all-
Detroit bronze medal doubles
match, Erica Brown and
Rachel Wool defeated Rachel
Wright and Carey Chicorel 6-
2, 6-1.
In track, Miriam Schreiber
won gold in the 100 hurdles.
Julie Golding and Rob
DeRoven took bronze medals
in the 100 meters. Golding
also won gold in the 200 and
triple jump.
