J
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
Supreme Court has rejected
two petitions to invalidate
the extradition of Robert
Manning, an American im-
migrant who has already
been expelled to the United
States to face charges con-
nected to a murder.
The court, in rejecting the
petitions, said they were
now pointless, as the plain-
tiff had already been remov-
ed from the country.
Mr. Manning's lawyer
tried to argue that the
extradition was illegal be-
cause his expulsion did not
take place within 60 days
after Justice Minister David
Libai signed the extradition
order.
In fact, the extradition was
substantially delayed be-
cause of a series of petitions
against it filed by Mr. Mann-
ing's lawyer.
Robert Manning, 41, along
with his wife, Rochelle, 53,
were sought by American
authorities in connection
with a 1980 mailbombing
that killed a secretary at a
California computer corn-
pany.
Robert Manning's finger-
prints were allegedly found
on the parcel's wrapping
paper and Rochelle Mann-
ing's prints on a letter of in-
structions for the parcel,
which had been labeled a
new invention."
Robert Manning was
extradited July 18 and is
currently awaiting trial in
California, where he has
pleaded not guilty in the
case.
On Aug. 16, Israel's
Supreme Court rejected
Rochelle Manning's final
appeal against her extradi-
tion, but she has not yet
been turned over to U.S.
custody.
The parcel bomb had been
addressed to the secretary's
boss, Brenda Krothmel. The
secretary, Patricia Wilker-
son, was instantly killed by
the explosive device when
she opened the package.
According to the U.S.
charge sheet, the Mannings
sent the bomb at the instiga-
tion of their friend, William
Ross, who had a business
dispute with Ms. Krothinel.
Neither is charged with
making the bomb but both
were charged with conspir-
ing to mail an explosive
device with intent to kill. 0
