even in the eyes of Jews, in
positioning himself as the
victim.
He's had a "certain
amount of success looking
victimized," said Rabbi
Joseph Spielman, chairman
of the Crown Heights Jewish
Community Council.
"The wounded attitude
helps him in the eyes of
those who would love that
the situation wouldn't have
been in the first place, the
`West Side liberals' who are
trying to find something to
latch onto the mayor with,"
said Rabbi Spielman.
Rabbi Spielman said that
"He's insulting us by mak-
ing pronouncements about
how we are victimizing him.
He's not only not repentant,
but is proud of what he did.
"All this posturing is to
cover the bottom line, which
doesn't exactly favor him.
Rather than being forthright
for two years, he has been
stonewalling us and is still."
Others say the Chasidim
have pushed their case too
hard in the court of popular
opinion.
Mr. Dinkins' victimized
position "garners sympathy
in the Jewish community,"
said the senior Jewish
organizational official. "If
the issue of Crown Heights
can be cheapened, then the
Chasidim have overplayed
their hand."
According to Mr. Saperia,
the mayor's Jewish liaison,
"Here they're going after
the sacrificial lamb beyond
the seeking of legitimate
redress.
"People I've talked to,
Jews and non-Jews, feel it
may be working in Dinkins'
favor and that enough is
enough."
The mayor has so far spent
two days, Aug. 23 and 25, be-
ing deposed by Franklyn
Snitow, the Lubavitchers'
attorney, in the presence of
several other Lubavitchers
including Yankel's brother
Norman, several mayoral
aides and four reporters
allowed in by the court.
The U.S. District Court
judge, Reena Raggi, is allow-
ing the plaintiffs to depose
Mr. Dinkins again after the
mayoral elections in
November.
They are planning to
depose former New York
City Police Commissioner
Lee Brown sometime in
September, according to
Rabbi Spielman. Mr. Brown
is now serving as the Clinton
administration's drug
"czar."
Mayoral aides Bill Lynch,
Herbert Block and Michael
Kharfen have already given
testimony. 11
