Now after all that biblical
and historical scholarship,
maybe you're looking for
something spicy in the way
of spy stories.
Michael
Bar-Zohar's
Brothers, published this
month by Fawcett, is the
tale of two brothers, one
who works for the KGB, the
other for the CIA. The book
combines fiction with fact (it
begins with an account of
the Night of the Murdered
Poets, Stalin's slaughter of
Jewish intellectuals, writers
and artists).
And just in case you think
authors who come up with
such stories ("spellbinding,"
in the words of the publish-
ers) probably really lead
dreary lives themselves,
take note: Mr. Bar-Zohar,
Ben-Gurion's official biogra-
pher, fought in the Sinai
Campaign of 1956, the Six-
Day War and the Yom
Kippur War. He has served
in the Knesset, worked both

Kurdistan.
And just in case that rein-
carnation stuff wasn't
unusual enough, there's
always Gabriel's Palace,
published by Oxford Uni-
versity Press, an anthology
of Jewish mystical experi-
ences from meetings with
demons to out-of-body travel.

describes a community
which has since virtually
disbanded (after the war,
members of the Jewish com-
munity in Kurdistan — now
part of Iraq — resettled in
Israel where they aban-
doned most of their unique
customs).
Before his death in 1942,
Mr. Brauer spoke at length
with these new immigrants,
considering their culture,
life-cycle events, occupa-
tions and relations with
Muslims. His research was
completed by historian
Raphael Patai, who served
as editor of The Jews of

as an air force intelligence
officer and with the para-
troopers and was press sec-
retary to Moshe Dayan.
Mr. Bar-Zohar also is the
author of Suez Top Secret,
an account of the Suez War,
for which he won the
Sokolov Prize (the Israeli
Pulitzer).

and Other Jewish Fairy
Tales and Miriam's Tam-
bourine: Jewish Folktales
from Around the World.
In Gabriel's Palace, Mr.
Schwartz recalls stories by
Shimon bar Yohai, said to
be the author of the Zohar;
Isaac Luria, the central fig-
ure among the Safed mys-
tics of the 16th century; and
the Baal Shem Tov, founder
of Chasidism.
Among the 150 tales are
stories with such tantalizing
titles as, "The Voice in the
Attic," "The Angel in the
Mirror," "The Cottage of
Candles" and "The
Enchanted Island." ❑
