Chicago (JTA) — The con-
fessed murderer of a Chicago
plastic surgeon and a San
Francisco hairdresser is a
neo- Nazi known to Jewish
groups here.
In an appearance last
week in court, after his ar-
rest, Jonathan Preston
Haynes said he was
motivated by a hatred of
anyone "feeding off Aryan
beauty.
"I condemn fake Aryan
cosmetics. I condemn
bleached blond hair, tinted
blue eyes and fake facial
features brought by plastic
surgery," Mr. Haynes said.
Informed he could face the
death penalty, Mr. Haynes
replied, "I'd consider it an
honor to give my life to this
cause."
According to police, Mr.
Haynes, a chemist who most
recently worked for the fed-
eral Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms, had
originally driven to Chicago
in- July from his Rockville,
Md., home to kill an ex-
ecutive for an eye care com-
pany.
But when he could not
carry out his plan, he
allegedly went to a library,
consulted the Yellow Pages
and decided to mark Dr.
Martin Sullivan for death
because of the prominence of
his advertisement.
Dr. Sullivan, who was not
Jewish, was killed in his
Chicago-area office. Mr.
Haynes also made
statements to the police
implicating himself in the
1987 murder of a hair-
dresser, Frank Ringi — also
not Jewish — in his San
Francisco salon.
At the hearing Aug. 9, the
judge ordered Mr. Haynes,
34, held without bail, and
indicated that he would be
subjected to a psychiatric
evaluation.
At that, Mr. Haynes told
the judge, "I would not ap-
preciate being judged men-
tally incompetent by a Jew-
ish psychiatrist."
According to the Anti-
Defamation League, Mr.
Haynes is the author of an
April 1991 letter addressed
to "White Racial Com-
rades," in which he offered
to send out copies of his art-
work — a booklet of neo-Nazi
collages he titled
"Hakenkreuz," the German
term for swastika.
"Just like our Fuhrer, I've
got the soul of an artist," Mr.

Haynes wrote in the letter.
The ADL has two of these
collages on file. One has the
Shroud of Turin superim-
posed on a picture of Hitler,
and the other shows angels
perched on Hitler's shoulder.
In the letter, Mr. Haynes
described himself as a
"bookish kind of guy" and
boasted that he has read
every book in the library on
the Third Reich.
"That's a small exagera-
tion (sic)," he said. "Right
now, I'm reading heavy into
Zionism: how those god-
damned clever (Jews)
swindled the Palestinians
out of their land."
Michael Sandberg, Mid-
west civil rights director for
the ADL, said this is the first
time the organization has
heard of this kind of motiva-
tion for a form of hate crime.
"This is someone who has
taken action regarding his
Nazi notions in a different

Reich.

and unprecedented way,"
Mr. Sandberg said. "Most
often, the victim of neo-Nazi
violence would be a Jew or
non-white. Yet these targets
are professionals who, in
their work, can offer what
Haynes regards as Aryan
characteristics to non-
Aryans.
"In other words, he be-
lieves he is furthering the
Nazi cause by attacking
those who would enable non-
Aryans to mimic Aryan
looks. That's his view of
Nazism, which is un-
precedented in our experi-
ence, and it led to tragic
violence in Chicago."
Mr. Sandberg said it is not
clear at this point whether
Mr. Haynes acted alone or as
part of an official neo-Nazi
organization. Police here are
investigating this angle, he
said.
Mr. Haynes is proof that
the strength of neo-Nazism
does not lie in the numbers
of neo-Nazis, according to
Mr. Sandberg. "A single
person bent on violent
bigotry can create a tragedy,
can be a cause for major con-
cern in a community," he
said.
