TOWERS OVER THE REST

ed from their excursions into
the mountains.
The pink curtains were
open so that the windows af-
forded a full view of mountain
peaks. One entire wall was
mirrored so that the whole
room reflected the mountain
scenery. There were several
menorot on the tables, and
kosher wines were in a glass
cabinet nearby.
Guests can attend minyans
every day. Upstairs, Mr. Levin
showed me the small shul,
again with views of the moun-
tains. In front was a velvet-
covered bimah and a wooden
ark in the corner; nearby was
a bookshelf full of prayer
books.
The guests who gather to
pray or to eat kosher meals
tend to be a diverse mix, said
Mr. Levin. "They're from
England, America, France,
Canada, Brazil, Argentina,"
Mr. Levin enumerated.
"They're really from all over
the world."

Summer is a
popular time, too,
when the number
of guests roughly
equals that of
permanent
residents.

That seems true of the
general visitors to Arosa, too.
The town is not as interna-
tional in flavor as St. Moritz.
Its dedicated enthusiasts like
the fact that it remains
strongly Swiss despite its
identity as a tourist resort.
But it indeed draws
tourists. Its year-round
population is just 3,000
residents; but in the winter,
this swells with the addition
of over 6000 visitors. Summer
is a popular time, too, when
the number of guests roughly
equals that of permanent
residents.
The town has appeal in all
seasons. In the summer, vaca-
tioners can go hiking and
mountain climbing, stroll by
the lake, enjoy the cool moun-
tain air, take scenic train
rides or play golf and tennis.
By November, snow starts
to cover the pine trees and the
ski slopes, and it's packed
deep by December. Ski buffs
can enjoy a long season in
Arosa and other resort towns
in the Grisons.
In any season, this moun-
tain town offers bracing
mountain air, spectacular
scenery and unspoiled
natural beauty. All this —
and a kosher hotel, too! ❑
