ners at the Maccabiah
Games included Noel
Strauss of Ann Arbor,
Jerald Rosen of Shelby
Township, Esther Frank of
West Bloomfield and Bill
Berris of White Lake
Township.
Strauss, an open divi-
sion swimmer, won three
golds with record-setting
performances and one sil-
ver.
Competing in the mas-
ters division, Rosen won
two golds and two silvers
in age 35-39 swimming;
Frank won two silvers and
one bronze in women's age
55-plus tennis; and Berris
was a member of the
bronze medal-winning
U.S. men's basketball
team.
Rounding out the list of
local entrants were
Michael Kobernick of
Huntington Woods (mas-
ters triathlon); Adam
Morse of Bloomfield Hills
(juniors table tennis);
Eugene Perle of West
Bloomfield (masters
squash); Jay Robinson of
West Bloomfield (masters
triathlon); Steven Rosen of
West Bloomfield (masters
basketball); Jonathan
Serman of West
Bloomfield (juniors table
tennis); and Max Sheldon
of Farmington Hills (grand
masters tennis).
It was the largest
Maccabiah Games in the
event's 61-year history.
More than 5,600 athletes
from 53 nations took part
in the 10 days of competi-
tion. A record 26 nations
earned at least one medal,
breaking the old mark of
24 set in 1989.
The U.S. group garnered
211 medals, a team record,
including 77 gold. ❑
