Ms. Schupf, who is known more popularly by her first name Sara Lee, the "nobody doesn't like Sara Lee," says she is no longer involved in the administration of the business which was founded by her father in 1949. But she is involved in the day-to-day promotions that result in raising money for her No. 1 issue: research on childhood diseases. "Sara Lee is the 19rgest corporation in the world named after a woman," says Ms. Schupf, the national president for the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science who spoke in Bloomfield Hills on Tuesday. "With this comes a responsibility to see that my name carries with it a sig- nificant interest in women," she says. "I have to make sure the name represents what I have in mind. It does. As Weizmann president, Ms. Schupf is not only try- ing co increase American awareness of the Weizmann Institute but working for better name recognition for women. "It's challenging to get people to visit Weizmann and it's also difficult to get people involved if they have never been there," Ms. Schupf says. It's no irony Ms. Schupfs involvement with Weizmann stems from her parents' interest in the institute. "Weizmann was my father's life." "Weizmann was my father's life," she says. "Before he passed away, (in 1988) the only thing he ever asked was that I continue at Weizmann. "My father supported a wheat project at Weizmann in which scientists were developing a higher-protein and higher-yielding wheat." The implications of this project could benefit the hungry, according to Ms. Schupf.
