GROUP la. 1 Prewar* TROY MOTOR MALL 643 -7660 Bryant Frank: Old, new blood. I t's coincidental that Bryant Frank is 37 years old. After all, the incom- ing president of Jewish Ensemble Theatre (JET) has been working with the fledgling organization since its inception four years ago. It just happens to be his turn at the helm, he says, as JET continues to expand its audience, aiming at all ages in the Jewish community, but especially the under-40 set. JET, says Mr. Frank, will have two goals: broaden its financial base and broaden its audience. "It was excit- ing and frightening during JET's first two years. Jim August was president; we mounted productions, nego- tiated a union contract and set up an office." Mr. Frank says the last two years, under Mary Lou Zieve, were "where do we go from here?" JET made inroads in writing grant proposals and received funding from the Michigan Council for the Arts and the DeRoy Foundation. Now it is time for expan- sion. Mr. Frank believes JET has established itself from a creative standpoint "and we learned about our audience — what they wanted and what we want- ed; there's a good tension there. But I don't want to do an entire season of Neil Simon stuff, even though that might be the easiest way to survive." JET will broaden its financial support through subscriptions and sponsor- ships, he says. "It is difficult to argue with people, to con- vince them on an individual basis that the preservation, nurturing and evolution of Jewish culture is as impor- tant as Ethiopian Jews or Soviet Jews or other Jews facing misfortune, or politi- cal campaigns that are important." Theater and culture are viewed as luxuries, Mr. Frank says, but he sees them as important as reli- gion and social action in the Jewish continuum. "No two are as strong as the three," he believes. And the younger genera- tions of Jews in the United States are not being raised with the same Jewish cul- tural component as the older generations. "So our subgoal," he says, "is to tar- get that segment of the com- munity that is noticeably absent from every theater in this country — people under 40. We won't exclude the others, but people over 40 are 85 percent of our sub- scribers." Mr. Frank can speak from experience about theater. An English and journalism major at the University of Michigan, he continued his voice training while in col- lege and appeared in seven off-Broadway shows in New York before returning to U- M for law school. He is now senior counsel for City Management Corp. in Detroit. He wants JET to become Detroit's off-Broadway. "We want people to consider JET along with all the other entertainment options. You don't have to get all dressed up, although you can if you want to. This is done in New York and Chicago. Why not here?" JET has created an audi- ence development commit- tee headed by Ron Klein, Marci Benson and Jonathon Frank. The committee will promote JET to young adult and singles groups, as well as other age groups, by helping to organize theater outings, as well as after- glow and talk-back events with the JET casts. Bryant Frank has a two- fold goal for the committee and for JET. He wants to increase from last year's 1,200 subscribers, and "I would like the community to view JET as one of its more
