State Rep. Maxine Berman.

r. Jacqueline Grekin,
a member of Temple
Israel, wants to helk)
others avoid the
anguish she experienced,
after putting her father in a
nursing home more that
four years ago.
Her elderly father suf-
fered from Parkinson's dis-
ease, a degenerative neuro-
logical disorder that cause-'
him to fall continuously.
Neither Dr. Grekin nor her
mother could provide the
24-hour care he required.
The best choice, the family
concluded, was a nursing
home.
Though she shopped
around, Dr. Grekin eventu
ally decided on a home that
not live up to her expecta
tions. She would not name
the nursing facility, but said
it was not a Jewish home
for aged.
Her family was miserable
because the staff did not
treat Dr. Grekin with
enough "humanism."
"The staff needs to recog-
nize the nursing home resi-
dents as people, not only a:_
the patients in Room 101.
Patients in nursing homes
should be treated with
respect, if not for what they
are then at least for what
they were, for the contribu-
tions they made to their
families and professions,"
she said. "My father always
wanted to make life easier
for other people. I just feel
that his experience
shouldn't be wasted."
At 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4
Temple Israel will sponsor a
program called "Honor Thy
Father and Mother." The 2-
hour-long seminar, to be
held at the temple, will fea-
ture speakers offering
advice on how to shop for a
nursing home. Dr. Grekin, a
