Cantor Hirschenfang

eronica Micks con-
verted to Judaism
and she's still learn-

ing.
Included in Ms. Micks'
quest was her attendance at
Midrasha Center for Adult
Jewish Learning's High
Holiday preparation course
Aug. 18 with Cantor Gail
Hirschenfang of Temple
Beth El.
Titled
"Awe
and
Grandeur: The Aesthetics of
Worship on the Days of
Awe," Cantor
Hirschenfang's one-hour
session was the first of a
four-part lecture series dur-
ing the Hebrew month of
Elul.
Elul is traditionally a
time for study before Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
"I'm trying to absorb a lot
of different aspects of
Judaism to incorporate into
my life," Ms. Micks said.
"And he (her husband,
Daniel Feiner) could learn
something, too."
More than 100 people
attended the program at the
Agency For Jewish
Education Building. The
crowd crossed the lines of
age and level of observance
— young Jews by choice sat
side by side with older men
in kippot involved in a dia-
logue with Cantor
Hirschenfang.
Combining fact, question
and answer, humor and
song, Cantor Hirschenfang
used the hour of 7:30 - 8:30
p.m. to approach the mean-
ings of the various services
and the symbolism many
take for granted.
She began with a "free
association"
of High

Holidays with the audience,
filling a blackboard with a
list of traditions like honey
cake, shofar, tickets, greet-
ing cards, Kol Nidre and
canvas sneakers.
"This list makes you real-
ize all that floods your mind
when you think of the High
Holidays. We're going to
examine the elements, indi-
vidually and collectively,
and how they contribute to
our understanding of the
holidays," Cantor
Hirschenfang said.
A discussion of prayer
versus worship (individual
and spontaneous versus
planned and communal) fol-
lowed, along with a sugges-
tion as to why one worships
("to feel a transcendental
connection with our God
concept and to create a
sense of community").
"To worship is the fulfill-
ment of the mitzvah of
prayer with intent," Cantor
Hirschenfang said. "It isn't
enough to just go to ser-
vices. You have to prepare

yourself mentally. All Jews
can experience prayer with
intent — it's about what you
let yourself feel."
An overview of worship
dysfunction (congregation
cannot sing along with a
cantor) and musical (shofar
blasts and octave jumps),
liturgical (renewal, rebirth,
return and repentance) and
philosophical (basic issues
of life and death) themes
was given.
" 'On Rosh Hashanah it is
written, on Yom Kippur it is
sealed.' Who will live and
who will die? And how will
they die?... We acknowledge
the sanctity of the day...The
music is haunting," Cantor
Hirschenfang said. "If the
Days of Awe feel awesome
to you, they should. You are
dealing with heavy themes,
seeing if you can measure
up or are missing the mark
— with the implication you
tried to hit it (the mark).
"The last two lines of the
service tell the story —
