She stressed that the
seminar is not just for peo-
ple with relatives currently
in nursing homes.
"I think the time to look
at nursing homes is when
you don't have the need,"
she said.
Preparing for the need
before it arises affords fami-
lies with enough time to
consider other options, like
in-home care or assisted liv-
ing, she said. Choosing a
nursing home or plan of
care before the need is
imminent also allows people
to separate emotions from
their judgment. It helps
them make better choices,
Dr. Grekin said.
State Rep. Maxine
Berman, D-Southfield, who
serves on the Nursing Home
Reform advisory committee
in Lansing, will discuss the
state role in regulating
nursing home care. Seminar
