Detroit's girls basketball team celebrated victory.

M

accabi team mem-
bers who competed
in St. Louis last
week have one wish
for their compatriots in
Pittsburgh this week: cool-
er weather.
The nearly 200 teens from
Detroit were split between
the two venues for the
regional JCC Maccabi
Youth Games. The athletes
in St. Louis battled 95
degree temperatures and a
heat index of 111.
Seth Weingarten lost a
quarter-final tennis match
in the 12-14 age division.
The match went four hours
in the heat. Weingarten
came back to team with
Solomon Amster to win a
bronze medal in doubles.
In the 15-16 age group,
Nick Dubin won a bronze
medal in singles. Elite Ben-
Ozer teamed with Erika
Stone to win the bronze in
12-14 doubles.
The boys soccer team
outscored their opponents
30-5 over five games to go
undefeated and win the gold
medal. Detroit defeated St.
Louis 7-0 and 5-0, and
Chicago 6-1, 4-3 and 8-1 for
the gold.
In gymnastics, Jodie
Rosenberg, age 12, earned
gold medals in floor exercise
and vault, silver medals in
uneven bars and the all-
around, and a bronze in bal-
ance beam. Jamie Hertza,
12, won gold medals in high
bar, floor, vault, parallel
bars, horse, still rings and
all-around.
The girls softball team
won the bronze medal with
only two players back from
last year's team. The team
was defeated by Cleveland
9-7, lost two to Chicago, but

beat Cleveland 8-1 to set up
the medal game. Highlights
included Heather Meyers
throwing out two runners
from center field and the
play of Stacey Schwartz at
first base.
The boys baseball team
also won the bronze, led by
the .700 batting average of
Ryan Weiss. The team
scored a come-from-behind
victory over eventual gold
medalist Chicago behind a
strong performance by
pitcher Evan Klein.
Detroiters won 77 medals
in swimming in St. Louis.
