CONGREGATION BEIT KODESH 31840 W. Seven Mile, Livonia SELICHOS SERVICES Saturday, September 11 at 10:30 p.m. ROSH HASHANAH Mr. Rabin made the emarks in a speech to members of the United Jew- ish Appeal's Prime Min- ster's Mission, a trip for top .,ontributors who arrived here last week. Despite reports that por- qns of American Jewry are 'isaffected by the Rabin .vernment's peace policies, nis speech to UJA defending those polices was warmly received. The peace process is com- plex, Mr. Rabin said, in part because of the precedent set in the peace treaty with Egypt, where "we had to return the last square inch of Egyptian soil the Egyp- tians demanded." The government is ready for compromise on the Golan Heights, he continued, but "I will not negotiate the dep- th of the withdrawal before I know what kind of peace we Mr. Rabin defended the government's decision to stop spending money on Jewish settlements. are getting in return. Will it be a peace the man on the street will call a peace?" Mr. Rabin also defended the government's decision to stop spending money on Jewish settlements in the administered territories and implicitly criticized the set- tlers there for protesting the change in policy. He said he would like the money to be spent instead on settlements along the Lebanese border, whose residents he called "the civilian heroes in Israel." The prime minister talked at length about the threat of Islamic fundamentalism emanating from Iran, which aims to gain control of moderate Arab regimes and bring an end to the current peace negotiations. He said Israel's continued military strength — along with getting Arab leaders to understand that the use of , violence against Israel will not advance their aims — is vital to the "basic under- standing that will lead to peace negotiations." Rabin praised the United States for understanding that "peace cannot be im- posed" and that "the main responsibility for the peacemaking process lies with the parties" concern- ed. ❑ Wednesday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 16 at 8:30 a.m. & 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 17 at 8:30 a.m. You are not alone.
