Hezbollah
Active Again

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Little
more than two weeks after
the U.S.-brokered cease-fire
brogght relative calm to the
region, Hezbollah has
resumed limited activities in
the southern Lebanon
security zone.
The Iranian-backed Shi'ite
extremists exchanged fire
with an Israeli patrol and
fired on an Israeli-allied
South Lebanon Army out-
post the following day.
But Hezbollah units did
not launch any Katyusha
rockets at Israeli set-
tlements along the Galilee
border.
Repeated Katyusha at-
tacks on Galilee had
prompted Israel to begin its
weeklong shelling of
southern Lebanon in late
July.
Hezbollah officials are now
claiming that they will only
fire Katyusha rockets at
Israel in response to Israel
Defense Force attacks on
Lebanese civilians in Leb-
anon.
But according to recent
Hezbollah announcements,
the units plan to continue
targeting IDF and SLA
troops in the security zone as
part of their ongoing efforts
to force Israeli troops and
their allies from Lebanese
territory.
IDF sources said that light
arms fire had been directed
at an armored patrol
operating near Kaukaba in
the eastern sector of the
security zone.
The assault caused neither
casualties nor damage, said
the Israeli military sources,
and their patrol returned the
fire.
The IDF announcement
countered Hezbollah reports
that they had fired three
rockets at the patrol.
Hezbollah also claimed
that the attack on SLA posi-
tions involved anti-tank
rockets and mortar bombs.
Last week, some 300
regular Lebanese Army
troops were sent by Beirut to
occupy four villages near the
security zone.
More troops were original-
ly planned, according to
reports from the region, but
a smaller force was sent on
instructions of the Syrian
government, which exercises
wide sway over Lebanon.
Damascus reportedly
feared that larger numbers
of Lebanese troops might at-
tempt to disarm Hezbollah
members, a move that might
lead to a resumption of civil
war in Lebanon.
