Lisa Spindler RECENT WORK AUG 5 28 Park West Altman Exhibit The love of nature will be the theme at Park West Gallery in Southfield with the open- ing of an exhibition by Harold Altman, one of America's printmakers. The exhibit will run through mid-September. The collection, inspired by nature, will feature litho- graphs and etchings spann- ing 20 years of the artist's career as well as new works. Similar to an architect in dealing with space, Mr. Altman carefully designs and controls his compositions, capturing small human dramas among nature's color- ful foliage or man's chaotic lifestyle. Mr. Altman's works teach viewers to see familiar places — such as beautiful famous parks — from new perspectives. Initially devoting his talents to drawing and pain- ting, the 69-year-old artist turned to etching and lithography in 1958 while at the University of Wisconsin on a faculty support grant. It was there that Mr. Altman discovered an etching press in an unused classroom. He then began his printmaking career with a "how-to" book. Mr. Altman's first litho- graphs were created in 1951 while he was a fellow at the Tamarind Lithography Work- shop. He creates each of his new lithographs by hand in the manner of those past masters. Park West has selected lithographs and etchings, spanning almost 20 years of work, to be offered with the new collection. This group perfectly reveals Mr. Altman's technical mastery and his broad range of subjects and interpretations. Many of these works are extremely rare and have not been made available to collectors for several years. Park West Gallery is located at 29469 Northwest- ern Highway in Southfield.
