Irish Cartoon
New York (JTA) — A polit-
ical cartoon in the Irish
Times newspaper that re-
ferred to southern Lebanon
as "Jewrassic Park" has
sparked an angry response
from the Anti-Defamation
League, who called it anti-
Semitic and "Jew-baiting."
The cartoon, which ap-
peared in the July 31 issue of
the newspaper, depicts a
preying dinosaur wearing a
Star of David helmet chas-
ing after frightened people
fleeing from a war zone.
While the region was
"60,000 years in the mak-
ing," it was "one week in the
destroying," the caption
read.
The cartoon is titled
"Jewrassic Park, AKA
Southern Lebanon," a
parody of Jurassic Park, a
current hit movie about
dinosaurs coming to life. Ab-
raham Foxman, ADL na-
tional director, called for an
apology in a letter to Conor
Brady, editor of the Dublin-
based newspaper. "Although
we believe that Israel's re-
cent action in Lebanon was
legitimate self-defense, the
Irish Times has every right
to express its opposition to
Israel's policies in Israel,"
Mr. Foxman said.
"The injection of the Jew-
ish element into the cartoon,
however, is irrelevant, inap-
propriate and offensive. It
serves only to stir anti-
Jewish animus," he said.
Mr. Foxman also sent a
ebpy of the letter to Ireland's
ambassadors to the United
States and to the United
Nations.

tions/Midwest Flood Relief

than $200,000 in efforts to
aid victims of the dev-
astating floods in the Mid-
west.
