Between Nliddlehelt and Orchard Lake Road Sam Rozenherg page b- 9 originally financed for the public by Mr. and Mrs. J.M.L. Maduro, a Jewish couple from Curacao; it memorializes their son George, a college student in Holland, who was captured by the Nazis and died in Dachau in 1945. Jewish travelers especially marvel at the reproduction of the Anne Frank House and the 1672 Portuguese synagogue, intriguing in detail. One of the fascinating reproductions is the Bin- nenhof (Inner Court) of the Hague. The miniaturized ver- sion sports a gilded royal coach with eight horses, delivering the queen for her annual speech. But a visit to the actual water-based, turreted and gabled brick complex in the Hague provides another treat. The Hall of Knights, originated in the 13th cen- tury as a hunting castle, over- whelms the visitor with its 87-foot-high oak cathedral ceiling, wooden shields and carved throne with red velvet. Not far away is Rotterdam, Holland's second largest city. Little that's historical sur- vives, since the Nazis leveled almost everything; buildings are post-World War II. For a Jewish connection, visit the 1940 synagogue on quiet Capucijnengang 2. The rounded, red brick edifice has an elaborate vaulted ceiling, interior Cor- inthian columns and brass chandeliers. It was restored during the '60s, using a bimah and benches from another deserted and deteriorating sy-agove. Not far away, the Castle de Haar near Utrecht is a delight with a surprise. This neo-Gothic, moated palace was designed by the same ar- chitect as Amsterdam's Ryksmuseum and Central Station and used by the fami- ly since the 15th century. But it was in ruins when Baron Etienne Van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar made an inspired marriage, bringing funds to rebuild the 336-room summer home in 1892. His wife? The wealthy and Jewish Helene de Rothschild. During their three-year honeymoon, they bought fur- niture and artworks throughout the world. Amid the marble statuary and Flemish tapestries, the 160 Chinese vases, and the velvet- covered walls, the eagle-eyed may spot an unusual decora- tion in the Night Room — gilded Stars of David adorn the high, wooden ceiling beams. Although Helene de Rothschild converted, she ap- parently wanted to make a Jewish statement. ❑
