persecutions. He tried to save
Jews but was interned
himself in Dachau where he
died in 1942. There's a
synagogue on Anne
Frankplein.
Gouda, a colorful town,
centers on the Markt. We
wandered the curving canals
amid old buildings, but
couldn't locate the synagogue
we sought. Perhaps it's no
longer functioning, since the
neighborhood seems
predominantly Arab. Still
functioning, though, is the
restored, round corn mill, the
Red Lion.
We had better luck in the
Delft, where the 130-year-old
synagogue had been rescued.
Because most of the city's
Jews were deported to concen-
tratior\ camps and only two
Jews were left after the war,
the temple stood empty.
Delft's City Council bought it
to preseve the building as a
monument to those missing,
saidAnnette Rabenou-Wise-
man, spokesperson for the
Jewish community.
Lately, the hotel next door
wanted to buy it and annex
the property. The community,
including 10 Jewish families
and Jewish college students,
rose up, she said. The City
Council then agreed it should
be preserved and a foundation
was formed.
An agreement was signed
giving the Jewish communi-
ty two years to raise about
$375,000 U.S. to purchase the
land and restore the 1861
synagogue.
This part of Holland is dot-
ted with windmills, and we
couldn't resist stopping at a
group of three thatch-covered.
mills at Stompwijk, alongside
a narrow canal with neat
houses and gardens.
But we were drawn on by
another wonder — Maduro-
dam, a miniaturized
reproduction of some of
Holland's most fabulous
buildings. Paths meander
among lilliputian landmarks
built at a scale of 1:25, about
the height of a 10-year-old
child.
From Amsterdam's massive
Royal Palace to 17th-century
Watergate, Madurodam's
buildings are complete in
detail and some mechanical-
ly operated. An oil tanker
sailing through the port
bursts into fire, doused by a
fire boat to the rescue. Trains
pull in and out of stations.
Windmills spin. Some planes
(including an El Al Israel Air-
ways jet) sit at the tiny air-
port; a few taxi down the run-
way. Canal boats sail on
Herengracht and bells ring in
church steeples.
They're all part of the park
