In 1825, there were only
6,000 Jews in the United
States, mostly of Spanish
and Portuguese descent.
This number doubled after
the 1848 revolutions in
Germany, Austria, Bohemia
and Hungary, and by 1880
there were some 25,000 ad-
ditional newcomers from
Poland and Russia. Massive
immigration occurred bet-
ween 1880 and 1924, when
more than two million Jews
reached the U.S., fleeing
programs and other
troubles.
