been talking about (the largest
age group approaching retire-
ment) will soon occur," Ms.
Braunstein said.
Ms. Braunstein worries
about the cost of caring for
the vast numbers of baby
boomers. She works to help the
elderly remain in their
homes and find the necessary
services to assist in day-to-day
living.
She views aging as a family
issue.
"The vast majority of fami-
ly members caring for their el-
derly are daughters in their
50s," she said. "But whoever is
doing the care giving is work-
ing an average additional four
hours a day with that parent or
relative. We're looking at care
management for the individu-
al and respite care for the fam-
ily. ,,
Often, families do not know
of available services. Ms.
Braunstein suggests they call
local agencies on aging, hospi-
tals or senior centers.
"I very strongly believe the
issues facing an aging society
are not just the concern of a
mighty band of specialists. As
we move into the next century,
it will require a commitment
and cooperation of all the corn-
munities to help us meet the
needs that will be dominating
our elders," Ms. Braunstein
said.
"We're looking
at care
management for
the individual and
respite care for
the family."

Rights Conference
Planned In Bulgaria
Paris (JTA) — Two officials
of the European Jewish
Congress traveled last week
to Sofia, Bulgaria, to for-
mulate plans with govern-
ment officials for a human
rights conference scheduled
for next year.
The conference will be co-
hosted by the EJC and the
Council of Europe, which
Bulgaria will chair for the
first time in July 1994.
Founded in 1949, the
Council of Europe is the
largest European political
body. It works to achieve
greater European unity and
to uphold the principles of
parliamentary democracy
and human rights.
Bulgaria wishes to use its
presidency of the council to
promote the spirit of
tolerance in central and
southern Europe.
Mr. Zhelev met with Jean
Kahn, the EJC president,
and Serge Cwajgenbaum, its
secretary-general.
The EJC leaders also met
with the Bulgarian min-
isters of foreign affairs and
justice, and with the repre-
sentatives of the Jewish
community in Bulgaria. ❑
