widowed or divorced. Today,
some clubs accept member-
ship from single women who
have no prior attachment to
the club. In addition, there
were always lockers for a
man's "significant other";
single women members now
receive the same privileges
for their "significant others."
Inequities still remain
and affect both men and
women. For example, a
male member planning to
marry does not have to get
membership approval for
his future spouse. Most
clubs, however, require
approval for the future
spouse of a single female.
They may also ask for
additional membership fees
since widows and divorced
women are often given spe-
cial financial consideration.
However, widowers and
divorced men do not receive
such considerations.
Moreover, many clubs also
provide special financial
consieration for single
daughters, while sons are
expected to pay full cost.
Membership categories
was the key topic at a recent
meeting of several private
clubs in the area. According
to Louis Egnater of
Farmington Hills, member-
ship chairperson at Tam-0-
Shanter, the meeting was
essentially a comparison.
Additional meetings are
scheduled.
Although nothing was
resolved, the meeting is evi-
dence that women's access
— not only to golf courses
but to the privileges and
responsibilities of being a
member of a private country
club — are high on club
agendas. ❑

Women Execs
Form League

Linda Kovan, a sales repre-
sentative for an automotive
component company, says
she is at a disadvantage
because she doesn't know
how to play golf.
"Most of my customers
know how to play and I'm
losing out on sales because I
can't work with them at a
corporate outing or during a
friendly game."
For women like Kovan,
the Metro Detroit Chapter
of the Executive Women's
Golf League was recently
formed for career women
who play golf and to help
bring more executive
women into the game.
For information, call the
league at 642-8474. ❑
