that players warm up suffi-
ciently, especially muscle-
stretching exercises, before
games. In warm weather,
players should wear ligh-
colored cotton T-shirts,
which pull perspiration
from the skin. Another

The basic key to
staying away from
injuries is proper
flexibility and
proper
conditioning, says
Shane Easterling,
an athletic trainer
with the University
of Michigan
MedSport, an out-
patient orthopedic
and physical
therapy clinic.

essential item is a hat to
keep the sun off the head
(a light-colored mesh base-
ment cap is perfect).
Coaches should take note
of how long a kid has been
playing. Injuries tend to
occur when players get
tired. Their muscles get
tired and they get sloppy in
their techniques.

Cross Country

Injuries in this sport are
"very individual and are
directly related to how
many miles an athlete
runs."
The most common in-
juries are overuse injuries,
such as shin splints and
pulled muscles, as well as,
on occasion, a sprained
ankle.

Winning Strategies

During a sport's season,
injuries tend to occur in a
reverse bell curve — high
in the beginning and end
(when players are fatigued)
and low in the middle
(when they're in condition
and haven't overused their
muscles.)
• The number one cause
of injuries is lack of condi-
tioning. So stay in shape
during the summer. An
exercise program doesn't
have to be rigorous, but it
should be regular.
• Avoid overheating.
There should be no restric-
tions on fluids. While exer-
cising, athletes should
drink 8 ounces of cold
water every 20 minutes. ❑
