Call 354-6060 Campus highlights: Hil- lel at Wayne provides a warm, comfortable atmos- phere on this inner-city commuter campus. Because it serves commuter stu- dents, Hillel is most active on weekdays. Eastern Michigan University Ypsilanti, Mich. Contact: (313) 487-1855 General population: 25,900 Jewish population: 900 Student perspective: Barry Feldman, 1993 gradu- ate, West Bloomfield Comments: There are not that many Jewish kids at Eastern to begin with. I don't think there is a high Jewish visibility. Most Jewish kids will join a fra- ternity or sorority. Basic- ally, the only Jewish kids I met were from West Bloom- field. As for Hillel, they closed a few years ago but this past year they started up again. They sent out fly- ers announcing different events but I decided I was not interested. I had lunch with Larry Smith, the vice president of Eastern, who is concerned with the Jewish community on campus. Campus highlights: The Hillel organization recently reopened its doors. Eastern Michigan is very close to University of Michigan, which has an active Jewish student population. Western Michigan University Kalamazoo, Mich. Contact: (616) 387-3501 General population: 20,000 Jewish Population: 350 Student Perspective: Keith Jacobson, 1993 grarl'- ate, West Bloornf' -_:,1 Colliments: There is a very small Jewish popula- tion at Western. Hillel is constantly in touch with the students. I've never been to Hillel, but they have tried to keep me informed by send- ing me information. As far as I know the only other Jewish organization is Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity and I'm not sure it's entirely Jewish. I think it would be harder for girls to find Jewish friends because as far as I know, there are no Jewish sororities. When I attended Michigan State University, people were more open about their reli- gion even though the Jewish population was still small. Campus highlights: The small local Jewish commu- nity is very receptive to stu- dents. Students who re- quire kosher food may be able to board with local fam- ilies. Hillel sponsors occa- sional programs and meals each month. Central Michigan University Mt. Pleasant, Mich. General population: 16,000 Jewish population: 150 Student perspective: Melissa Seligman, 1993 graduate, West Bloomfield Comments: Going to Central was an educational experience because I was considered the token Jew.
