a New York-based trade publi- cation, is eclectic dressing. That means, she said, "taking dressy and casual elements and mixing them together where there is no right or wrong." Supermodels like Cindi Craw- ford and Naomi Campbell have the look down pat. Their saucy, nonchalant way of mixing vin- tage pieces and Gap basics with haute couture has made them the new trend-setters for young girls, says Bonnie Horowitz- Fuller, editor-in-chief of YM magazine, which reaches over one million teen-age girls ages 13 to 20. A hot item among this age group right now is the classic plaid flannel shirt. Girls may wrap it around the waist of a long, delicate granny-print dress and ground the look with clunky work boots. Take that exact same plaid flannel shirt for boys and they will layer it open like a jacket. The point is — it's not what you wear but how you wear it. If this anything-goes, ramshackle- street style reminds you of "grunge," the fashion rage of last season, then you've got the right idea. This eclectic look has been the backbone of the retail clothing chain-cum-latest-teen-hangout, Urban Outfitters, since they first opened their doors 23 years ago. "We were showing Doc Martens and long flowing dress- es together before this whole grunge movement became fash- ionable," said their national spokesperson, Adriane Butler. "Fashion has finally caught up to us, and even Vogue magazine is calling." What's new for back-to- school? Butler calls the look "ur- ban renewal" — a mix of old recycled clothing with something new. "There are no strict dress- ing rules. Just wear what feels good," she advised. But don't worry, Moms. Den- im still reigns for back-to-school clothes with both boys and girls. "Primary-colored denim is stronger than ever," said Susan Blair, national director of Tal- bot's Kids. Both boys and girls are wearing their jeans super- baggy, buying them in extra-ex- tra large sizes and belting them at the waist. Girls are also wear- ing denim short-shorts layered over long-johns, opaque tights or slim sweatpants. Obviously, layering is impor- tant. Boys are layering hunting- style multi-pocketed vests and hooded shirts with everything. For girls, a cropped sweater over a long white shirt looks fresh. So does a dress layered over an- other dress (often sheer) over slim, fluid trousers.
