Give someone another golden day .. . Audiences don't attend her performances expecting Pollyanna palaver. Clean, clever and caustic, Rita Rudner is seductively sweet with a snide side. She can bat her eyelashes and take a swing at the jugular at the same time. "This is not Mary Poppins talking," she says. It has been a super- califragilistic career, Ms. Rudner will be the first to admit. The comely come- dian/actress/author is a one- woman band of talent taking note of all that life has to offer. A lot of that, says Ms. Rudner, has to do with being raised in a caring Jewish home where she learned good sense and sensibilities. And the value of a good sense of humor. Both parents, says the comedian, could tell a good joke. But the comedy business is no family affair; it is com- petitive, and it can be gruel- ing and enervating. Ms. Rudner did her homework away from home, studying comedians on stage and researching the art of com- edy at the Lincoln Center library before she got her first club booking. Not that she didn't have a career to step back into. Rita Rudner got a kick out of musical theater early on, and performed as a dancer on Broadway in Annie some 20 years ago. Once a perfor- mance was wrapped, she danced off to the library for more study. Ms. Rudner concedes she couldn't have choreogi aphed a better career than the one she has now in comedy. After all, she says, dance had its downside — espe- cially for others. "I was a ballerina. I was terrible. In Swan Lake, I was the lifeguard. I injured a groin muscle — it wasn't mine." Pause. "He's doing very well." And so is Rita Rudner. Besides the stand-up gig in Atlantic City, she is filming a new pilot in Las Vegas. "It's a new style TV show," muses Ms. Rudner, "a real- ity-comedy show." What does it have going for it? "It's funny — and cheap." Getting married may have exacted a price on her sin- gles shtick ("You know how I end relationships in New York? I just say, 'I want to marry you...I want to have your children.' Sometimes they make skid marks,") but Ms. Rudner has plenty of new source material to draw on. 0 Tunnel bar•b Q, • Home of World-Famous Spare Ribs And Fabulous Quality Homemade Pastries WE ARE NOW SERVING BEER & WINE FOR YOUR DINING CONVENIENCE 58 Park St. E.
