Rome (JTA) — Rome's chief
rabbi has written to Pope
John Paul II expressing soli-
darity following the car
bomb attacks that damaged
two churches in Rome last
week.
In a telegram, Rabbi Elio
Toaff noted the "painful
coincidence" that the at-
tacks fell on Tisha B'Av, the
anniversary of the destruc-
tion of the Temple in
Jerusalem.
"With deep sadness I join
in the widespread expres-
sions of condemnation for
what has happened, adding
my hope that reason and
faith will prevail over this
new form of barbarity," the
chief rabbi wrote.
"July 27 is a dark day in
the Jewish calendar because
on that day the Temple of
Jerusalem was destroyed,
and the fact that these at-
tacks happened on that very
day seems a painful coin-
cidence," he wrote.
On the night of July 27,
two car bombs seriously
damaged the medieval chur-
ch of San Giorgio in Velabro,
in the heart of Rome, near
the ancient Roman Forum
and the great Basilica of St.
John Lateran, known as the
"mother of churches."
No party has taken credit
for the bombs, but in-
vestigators are focusing on
ties to the Mafia, which has
been under a war on corrup-
tion and organized crime.
Last week, law-
enforcement officials in Sici-
ly arrested a third suspect in
a car bombing last year
which killed a top Mafia
prosecutor.
In addition, officials in-
vestigating the current str-
ing of bombings are looking
into possible connections to
right-wing terrorists, secret
service agents, unspecified
foreign interests or others
bent on derailing the current
political reform process. 0
