New York (JTA) — After re-
ceiving numerous protest
calls by pro-Palestinian
groups and individuals,
Delta Air Lines withdrew its
sponsorship of a fund-raising
event held last week by the
Chicago chapter of Friends
of the Israel Defense Forces.
Hours before the Aug. 4
event, Delta also withdrew
the business-class tickets to
Israel it had donated to the
dinner- and-auction event
months before.
Delta, which recently
began flying to Israel,
notified Friends of the IDF
in mid-July that it would no
longer be an official sponsor
of the fund-raiser, as it had
agreed to be in April, but
would still provide the
tickets to be auctioned.
But at the last minute, the
airline revoked the tickets,
which were to be the auc-
tion's big draw and were ex-
pected to raise $10,000 for
the organization.
Representatives of Friends
of the IDF say they have
received neither explanation
nor apology from Delta for
the airline's actions, which
they say were prompted by
pressure from pro- Palestin-
ian groups.
James Murray, Delta's
Midwest District Marketing
Manager, said the airline
withdrew its sponsorship on
July 14 because the event
"was getting more polit-
ical."
But he emphasized that it
was his decision to pull out
and that "the suggestion
that others brought pressure
to bear is untrue.
"No groups against this
(event) have been in touch
with me. There was some
phone traffic (to Delta's of-
fices), but it was more inter-
rogative, asking if we were
sponsoring the event. It
wasn't anything substan-
tive, like objections," he
said.
Groups widely recognized
as pro-Palestinian have ac-
knowledged placing calls
and writing letters to Delta
protesting the airline's
sponsorship of the fund-
raiser.
The Council for the Na-
tional Interest Foundation, a
Washington-based group
which claims 6,500 members
nationwide and is campaign-
ing to end U.S. aid to Israel,
said it was only one of
several groups that had con-
tacted Delta, urging the
airline not to sponsor the
event.
Mercy Corps International
also worked to convince
Delta to drop its connection
with the fund-raiser.
The Rev. Donald Wagner,
who runs the organization's
Middle East office, described
Mercy Corps as an
interdenominational Chris-
tian organization devoted to
education for the sake of
Middle East peace.
His group sent letters of
protest to Delta and to the
Field Museum of Natural
History in Chicago, which
was rented out by the
Friends of the IDF for the
event.
An official at the Field
Museum in Chicago said the
museum had received dozens
of calls and letters pro-
testing the fact that Friends
of IDF was renting its space.
When asked why the
airline revoked the offer of
Delta also
withdrew the
tickets to Israel it
had donated.
two free tickets to Israel just
three hours before the auc-
tion was to begin, Delta's
Murray said the decision
was prompted by adver-
tisements placed by Friends
of the IDF that were
published weeks before.
He objected specifically to
an ad published in local Jew-
ish newspapers in early July
which touted the auction of:
• "Political memorabilia
from Israel's leading
statesmen, including Prime
Ministers Rabin, Peres,
Shamir and Begin. • IDF
paraphernalia including
flight jackets, uniforms,
medals, boots, sweaters and
a non-functional Uzi; •
Tours of IDF sights, in-
cluding the Tel Noff Air
Base, the Paratroopers
School, the Naval Base in
Haifa and the assembly line
for the Merkavah Tank."
Representatives of Friends
of the IDF said that Delta
had approved all ad copy
before it was published.
While 400 supporters of
Friends of the IDF gathered
inside the Field Museum on
Aug. 4 for the dinner and
auction, an estimated 35 pro-
Palestinian demonstrators
marched and chanted out-
side for about two hours. ❑
