precious metal. "Here I work
with my team to do the clean-
ing, polishing, gold-plating
and finishing of metal," he ex-
plained, greeting each
member of the team, stopping
to look at their work and give
encouragement.
They were a varied group —
native Israelis, Arabs and
several recent Russian im-
migrants. Mr. Meisler in-
troduced each of them. Sam
Sananes was doing the gold
and silver plating, and so was
Oranit Kimchi, the only
woman worker. Henry Zafir,
from Solchi on the Black Sea,
wore a face mask as he
smoothed out the metal; and
Soliman Shatat was polishing
the silver.
Besides the pieces they
were working on, Mr. Meisler
and his team had just finish-
ed work on a new mezzuzah
that was then sent off to be
silver-plated.
"It's a special moment
when we get the first one,"
said Mr. Meisler. In this case,

material and then
works it into a
master cast.
it was even more special
because he'd been working on
a new technique of metal
casting, and the mezuzzah
was one of the first few pieces
using this technique.
"It's the beginning of a new
approach which will have
great potential for new in-
novation," said Mr. Meisler.
A native of Danzig (now
Gdansk), young Frank
Meisler escaped to England
with other Jewish children
just two days before the out-
break of World War II.
He was raised and educated
in England, graduating with
a degree in architecture from
Manchester University and
became a professional ar-
chitect who sculpted for
pleasure.
He chose sculpture 15 years
ago, and he's been remark-
ably productive ever since.
In the past 12 years he's
created at least 200 works,
and his pieces are sold in
galleries in Brussels, Am-
sterdam, London, Baden,
San Juan and in Tel Aviv,
Jerusalem and Old Jaffa.
He's created sculptures for
heads of state and for special
occasions. For example, as one
aspect of the quintencenten-
nial of the Jewish expulsion
from Spain, he was commis-
sioned to create a sculpture
