India Group
Comes To Israel
GOES ON SALE
Jerusalem (JTA) — A group
of single people from India
arrived in Israel last
weekend under the auspices
of an organization that be-
lieves they are remnants of
the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel.
The Indians, who range in
age from 17 to 35, are from
the northeast Indian states
of Mizoram and Manipur
and came here on Israeli
tourist visas, the Interior
Ministry confirmed.
The Indians will replace
Arab agricultural workers
in the Gaza Strip, who are
viewed- by Jewish settlers
there as a security threat.
The group will also spend
time preparing for conver-
sion to Judaism.
Israel's Chief Rabbinate
has approved the conversion
program for the Indian
group.
The group is sponsored by
Amishav, an organization
committed to bringing back
to Judaism and Israel people

basis of speculation since
they were exiled nearly
3,000 years ago.
Their airfare was re-
portedly paid by Dr. Irwin
Moskowitz of Miami and his
son-in-law, Yigal Hirsch.
Rabbi Eliyahu Avichail,
the director of Amishav, was
reported to be sorry he was
sending the group to the
Gaza Strip.
But he said he was unsuc-
cessful in finding within
Israel proper an observant
community willing to ac-
commodate the group and
provide opportunities for
them to do physical labor.
The group belongs to a
nearly 1-million-member
tribe which believes it is a
remnant of the tribe of
Menashe.
More than a century ago,
Christian missionaries con-
verted the tribe, though
about 5,000 of the group now
live as Jews.
This group of Indians joins
another group from the same
area of the country that is
studying and working
