In Commack, N.Y., which
is on Long Island, packages
of anti- Semitic and anti-
black flyers were left on
more than 100 lawns, ap-
parently by white
supremacists.
One of the flyers depicted a
young white girl, with the
words "I don't want to live in
a crime infested black
jungle. I don't want to be
raped or murdered," next to
her.
The leaflets were similar
to racist flyers found
distributed elsewhere on
Long Island last November,
police said.
Police speculated that
whoever distributed the
flyers in Commack might
have seen a recent incident
of anti-Semitic vandalism as
an opportunity to recruit
people for the white
supremacist cause.
The Commack High School
track was defaced last mon-
th with slurs such as 'Kill
Jews' and 'Hitler is a hero'
on the morning of the
school's graduation.
Last week, Robert Rolston
and Philip Argiros, who
graduated from Commack
High School the morning the
slurs were discovered, were
arrested on charges that
they vandalized schOol prop-
erty.
The ADL praised the in-
tensive investigation by the
Bias Crimes Bureau . of the
Suffolk County Police
Department and Fourth
Squad Detectives that led to
the two teen-agers' sur-
rendering to the police.
"The intensity of the in-
vestigation and the help Of
the entire community dem-
onstrates how serious bias
crimes should be taken,"
said Harriet Bogard, direc-
tor of the ADL'S New York
regional office.
Jewish communal leaders
reacted strongly to the in-
cidents in Queens.
"These offensive tactics
are the work of cowards,
who, under the cover of
darkness, spread their
hatred. Although they're
small in number, their mes-
sage should be taken seri-
ously," said Robert
Machleder, chairman of the
ADL's New York regional
board.
"We must not let hatred
and bigotry pierce the fabric
of our city and exacerbate
the population's fears.
Government agencies must
make sure that this kind of
activity is stopped at its
onset," said Mandell Gan-
chrow, chairman of the In-
stitute for Public Affairs of
the Orthodox Union. ❑
