Gaza Attack Takes Its Toll Jerusalem (JTA) — One Israeli was killed and five persons wounded in a ter- rorist attack in Gaza de- scribed as a reprisal for Israel's weeklong shelling of southern Lebanon. Armed terrorists who were apparently members of the Muslim fundamentalist organization Islamic Jihad commandeered a bus operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refu- gees and then deliberately smashed it into two cars belonging to the Israeli Civil Administration. According to reports, the terrorists had loaded the bus with explosives, which failed to detonate in the collision. An Israel Defense Force bomb squad subsequently dismantled the explosives safely. Authorities believe that four masked attackers were involved in seizing the bus, although only two of them were on board when it col- lided with the two vehicles. The incident took place near the Sheik Ajlin neigh- borhood of Gaza City. Yitzhak Amir, 46, an Israeli tax collector for the military government in the Gaza Strip, died in the colli- sion. Five people who were employees of the military government were wounded and taken to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, where two were reported to be in critical condition. It was not until after the attack had taken place that the driver of the UNRWA bus reported that the bus 'had been taken by force. Police suspect that the driver had collaborated with the attackers, and he was held for questioning. About a half hour after the incident took place, the Islamic Jihad publicized a communique claiming responsibility for the attack as an act of revenge for the shelling of Lebanon. Manning Trial Set For Sept. Los Angeles (JTA) — Robert Maiming, who arrived here last week after losing a two- year battle against extradi- tion from • Israel, has been scheduled to stand trial Sept. 14 on charges con- nected with the 1980 mail- bombing murder of a California secretary. During a brief arraign- ment in federal court, Mr. Manning entered a plea of not guilty. The case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Dickran Tevrizian. Mr. Manning, who holds dual Israeli and American citizenship, is accused - of mailing a booby-trapped device to a local computer company in 1980. Judge Tevrizian presided over the trial of Mr. Mann- ing's wife, Rochelle, on iden- tical charges in January 1989. The jury deadlocked in her case and she returned to Israel, where she is fighting a U.S. request for extradi- tion to enable a retrial. Robert Manning has so far been denied bail. But his at- torney, Richard Sherman, said he will shortly submit a motion asking that Mr. Manning be released on bail.
