honoring the Jewish con-
tribution to Columbus'
voyages.
"This project involved a lot
of research about Columbus
and about the Jewish con-
tribution," said Frank
Meisler, who, with colleague
Arie Ovadia, tracked down
numerous facts before he set
to work on the design. He
visited archives in Seville, in-
terviewed scholars, studied
maps and atlases. "You have
to really dig to find out the
Jewish facts."
After completing the ar-
duous research, Mr. Meisler
made a model of his sculpture
and took it to Spain, where it
was immediately accepted.
Then he created an original
plus two replicas.
Titled Columbus and the

Jewish Contribution to the
Voyages of Discovery, the

original is a massive 10-foot-
high sculpture made of brass,
zinc and pewter. It depicts
many of the facts Mr. Meisler
uncovered in research; for in-
stance, Mr. Meisler included
part of the Atlas Catalan, a
collection of maps drawn by
Abraham Cresques, a Jewish
cartographer from Majorca,
Spain.
The sculpture was unveiled
in Seville in March of 1992
and then was displayed in
Madrid last November. Next
it went on to Toledo. One of
the replicas was exhibited in

the Museum of Fine Arts in
Miami in March.
While working on special
projects, he also goes right on
creating the intricate small
pieces in precious metals that
are sold in his galleries both
in Israel and abroad.
The largest number of
Meisler sculptures are on
display in Old Jaffa, in the
gallery which is on the
ground floor of Mr. Meisler's
studio and workroom. Here
Mr. Meisler playfully posed
for a photo next to one of his
sculptures.
Besides all the actual works
on display — gleaming, in-
tricate pieces in precious
metal — on the walls were
photos of some of his most
well known works, including
one of his favorites: a
sculpture outside the
Shakespeare Memorial
Theater in Stratford on Avon
in England.
As for the sculptor himself,
he enjoys all the opportunities
he has to use Jewish culture
in his creations. He's never
regretted making that choice
of sculpture over architecture.
"With architecture, your
own work goes through so
many other hands, and every
project is a hybrid of interests.
But with sculpture, I can
create and then see the
results much more directly.
So for me, there's much more
satisfaction."

Saudi GATT Bid
Faces Opposition

Washington (JTA) — Pro-
Israel forces and their sup-
porters in Congress are seek-
ing to block a bid by Saudi
Arabia to join the General
Agreement on Tariffs and
Trade until it abandons the
Arab boycott of companies
doing business with Israel.
Rep. Sam Gejdenson, D-
Conn., introduced a resolu-
tion in the House of Repre-
sentatives opposing the
Saudi bid to join the interna-
tional trade regime until the
Arab country "formally and
publicly renounces its par-
ticipation in the secondary
and tertiary Arab boycott."
Mr. Gejdenson, who chairs
the House Foreign Affairs
subcommittee on economic
policy, trade and envi-
ronment, introduced the
resolution at the request of
the World Jewish Congress,
the group reported.

Sam Gejdenson:
Introduced the resolution.

The secondary and tertiary
aspects of the boycott refer to
an Arab blacklist of com-
panies or countries doing
business with Israel, and of
third parties doing business
with those companies or
countries.
