Mr. Sporn, 22, was part of a delegation of young Chris- tians and Jews from around the world who recently visited Rome, Jerusalem and Haifa together on a program sponsored by the Interna- tional Council of Christians and Jews. Mr. Sporn's father has re- mained suspicious of Catholics since his experi- ences in Europe during the Holocaust. "My father said, `Christians kill Jews, and there's no reason for you to go,' " said Mr. Sporn. "But I believe that if any understanding will be ac- complished between people I had to go," said Mr. Sporn, the only American Jew in the delegation of six Jews and 30 Christians. "I was motivated to go by my father's experiences." When Pope John Paul II met the group on July 2, Mr. - Sporn told him that he is the child of a Holocaust survivor and the pope responded, 'I thank you for coming,' " said Mr. Sporn. "He appeared to me not as a politician, but as a humble old man," he said. "I saw a very sincere human being with a good heart." Group members ranged in age from 20 to 29. The Chris- tians were Catholic, Anglican and Protestant. The Jews, who, aside from Mr. Sporn were from England, France Israel and Sweden, represented the en- tire range of religious obser- vance, said Mr. Sporn. The group visited Rome from June 30 to July 3, con- tinued the special young leadership conference in Jerusalem through July 11, and went on to Haifa for the International Colloquium of the International Council of Christians and Jews, which concluded July 15. While in Rome the group stayed at a boarding house called the House of the Im- maculate Conception, which is run by nuns. There was a crucifix in each room. When the Jewish participants took them down from the walls for the dura- tion of their visit, the Chris- tian group members noticed and asked why. "I explained that a crucifix As you've heard by now, we're making news in design! Pope John Paul II: Appeared very sincere. is uncomfortable, that when I see one I think of how many Jews were slaugh- tered at the altar of this cross, of crusades," said Mr. Sporn. "It led to discussion. They were receptive. They understood." According to Mr. Sporn, the discussions were "more open and honest because we were novices, not clergy and academics. "A lot of highly sensitive issues were discussed openly and honestly. And all of us became friends," said Mr. Sporn, who is a fourth-year student at Hunter College. He hopes to go to rabbinical school after graduating. "The trip enabled me to understand that the world is peopled by various religions and societies, and that we all have the responsibility to work together for a common good," said Mr. Sporn.
