conversations like the fol-
lowing never occur:
"What do you do?"
"I'm an accountant."
"Really? Add a list of
numbers. What's 96 x 24?"
Mr. Gold's estimation of
his own professional and
personal identities has
changed over the years.

He likes to talk
with his audience.

"As time goes on, I really
appreciate more of a well-
crafted, verbal joke, where-
as before I was more tuned
into gags and visual
humor," he explained. "Also,
I'm paying a little more
attention to the religious
and spiritual side of my life
as opposed to just simply
the job and career side of it.
"Because of my traveling
around the country so
much, it was very difficult
to meet someone, and I
allowed that to become very
unimportant."
He recently broke off a
two-year relationship, but
"for the first time, I'm
starting to contemplate
marriage, and as the idea of
having someone in my life
becomes more important,
then religion also becomes
important."
On a more immediate
basis, including his work in
Michigan, Mr. Gold has a
clear vision of himself: "I'm
the guy who tries to make
people laugh at the things
in life that otherwise might
make them angry."
