Most, however, are painted a golden yellow with red tiled roofs and curlicued white trim. The architecture is ex- emplified by Mikve Israel- Emanuel, the western hemisphere's oldest synagogue in continual use. The synagogue on Hanchi Snoa (the Alley of the Synagogue) was built in 1730 by Sephardic Jews who had escaped the Inquisition, found refuge in Holland, then emigrated when the Dutch government encouraged settlers. The interior bears large col- umns, highly polished mahogany bimah and pews, sterling silver candlesticks and gleaming brass chandeliers dating from 1703. It's closed Sundays. "This is the mother con- gregation of the Americas," said Miriam Capriles, curator of the museum located on the premises. Exhibits include large circumcision chairs, 18th-century Bibles and ketubot. Ms. Capriles, a descendant of an original Jewish family, worries about the lack of money needed to keep the items from deteriorating. Ironically, this congregation sent donations to help construct New York's Congregation Shearith Israel (the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue) and Newport's 'Iburo Synagogue. Outside the city, the 17th- century Landhuis Habaii is the only remaining lan- dhouse in a once-Jewish quarter and may be visited to see how plantation owners lived. The Hato Caves provide an interesting look at underground limestone caves with white, brown and orange formations. Our next stop was at Limon, Costa Rica, where we journeyed to the country's capital, San Jose. Beyond the port city, houses were neatly painted and inhabitants cleanly garbed. The bustling city of San Jose offers several important sights: the 1897-National Theater, a small, baroque Spanish Renaissance gem with gilded and marbled in- terior walls. Its crystal sconces resemble cocoa pods. The flea market outside offers Central American han- dicrafts at reasonable prices. The National Museum showcases a fine pre- Columbian section including metates (carvings from a large, single piece of volcanic rock) and a large jade pendant 2,500 years old. The Gold Museum and the Jade Muse- urn offer other important pre- Columbian artifacts. ❑ * "MISS SAIGON" Toronto * * STRATFORD FESTIVAL * * Aug. 21-22 (1 Nite)....Fr. $199 * * "Gypsy' & "Mikado" ....Fr. $215 * * Aug. 27-29, Sept. 3-5, 17-19 & * * Aug. 21-22, Sept. 4-5, Oct 9-10 * * Thru Nov. * * "Mikado" — Aug. 25 $72 * * Hotel • Show • Tour (2 Nites Only) * * "Gypsy" — Aug. 29 $85 * * * (Also Thru October) * SHAW FESTIVAL (Niagara-On- * . * * * * The-Lake, Ont.)
