Are you prepared for the
High Holiday challenge?

We all know that before running a marathon or
undertaking any strenuous activity, thoughtful
people prepare for the challenge by practicing
their skills and building up their endurance.

Why don't we approach our spiritual well-being with the
same amount of care and attention that we devote to our
quest for physical health and fitness? Many of us fail to
prepare for the intensive experience of Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur, then feel let down and disappointed
when the High Holidays don't seem "meaningful."

Gad Yaacobi:
Grateful for 'silence.'

U.N. Silent
On Attacks

United Nations (JTA) — The
U.N. Security Council has so
far remained conspicuously
silent on the Israeli attacks
against Lebanon.
Instead, U.N. Secretary-
General Boutros Boutros-
Ghali has criticized Israel in
a statement that bears only
rhetorical weight.
The silence on the current
events was almost audible
when the Council met brief-
ly last week to renew the
mandate of the
5,250-member U.N.
peacekeeping force in Leb-
anon, as it has every six
months for years.
Following the renewal,
which was approved without
discussion, the president of
the Council read a statement
regarding Lebanon that was
not was not very different
from previous statements.
It reaffirmed commitment
to Lebanon's sovereignty
and national unity, express-
ed concern over continuing
violence and urged all par-
ties to exercise restraint.
At the end of the Security
Council meeting, Israeli
Ambassador Gad Yaacobi
expressed his gratitude that
there was no broader discus-
sion.
"Our only goal is to protect
the inhabitants of Israel
from terrorist attacks and to
create a situation which will
enable the speedy resump-
tion of the peace talks," he
said.
Mr. Boutros-Ghali, in his
statement, directed his
criticism toward Israel's an-
nounced policy of displacing
civilians in south Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister
Yitzhak Rabin has said he
hopes that the refugees cre-
ated by the Israeli born-
bardments will put pressure
on the Lebanese government
to rein in Hezbollah.

Jewish tradition offers help for this problem (it's not new).
It teaches us that during the month of Elul, which leads up
to Rosh Hashanah, we should study, reflect, and prepare
spiritually for the Yamim Nora'im - the "Days of Awe."

In the spirit of this beautiful teaching, the
Midrasha Center for Adult Jewish Learning
and the Detroit Jewish News present

"ELUL: A TIME TO PREPARE"

4 Lectures and one Mini-Course

• ALL FREE OF CHARGE •
as our gift to all adult learners who wish to prepare
spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually for the
upcoming High Holidays • Details coming soon!
