McIntyre wound up as his
team's third-leading scorer,
with 82 points in the seven
games, although spending
much of the time in some
games on the bench when
Israel needed more defensive
pressure.
Now, back, in Israel, the
birth of his son is foremost on
McIntyre's mind, although he
is also anxious about the
result of arbitration.
"I like Israel; it's a
beautiful, modern country.
We live in Haifa, which looks
like San Francisco at night.
My wife's from there, which
makes it special.
"But. I'm an American.
"I can play in the third divi-
sion as an Israeli, but I'd have
to wait three years to play as
an Israeli in the first or se-
cond division. I'd also have to
serve in Israel Defense Forces.
Because of my age, it'd be less
than the usual three years. It
could be as low as three
months, I've heard.
"But as far as changing my
religion . . . I have an Irish
Catholic father and a Scottish
Methodist mother . . . I guess
I'm a free agent. It'd be hard
to change. But my children
will be raised as Jews.”
In the Jewish religion, if a
child's mother is Jewish, the
child is considered Jewish
unless it is raised in another
faith.
McIntyre's wife, Yaffa, was
raised as an observant Jew.
"If I'm at home we don't
keep the Sabbath so strictly,"
he said, "but while I'm here,
I'm sure she's keeping it now"
At Missouri, McIntyre com-
pleted his bachelor of arts
degree in general studies,
with concentrations in
business, music and social
psychology: "I didn't know
what I wanted to do," he ad-
mitted. "I'm studying
• management now at the
Technion (Israel's only
technical institute of higher
education) and I have help
with the Hebrew. I'm think-
ing of a future in sports
management, coaching or be-
ing a player's representative,
or maybe being a general
manager of a team in
Europe."
But that's far in the future.
Right now, there's the birth of
his son, and the results of the
arbitration that will decide
his future as a player in his
adopted country, Israel. ❑
